Questions

So what's all this about then?
Mozilla is a wab screiver an ither internet tools program. It is free software (or open source if ye want) an it is whit Netscape 6 is based oan. Fae mair infaemation see Mozilla Webpage. Like maist modern programs the day, Mozilla can be translated intae different languages (in this case frae American English), this is ma translation ay it intae Scots.
Scots? Is that a language? I've never heard of it, is it a dialect of English?
Scots is a language, like Italian or Welsh or whitiver. A surprising number ay people hae trouble believing this. This is whit the people frae Freshmeat had tae say...
The following notes are in response to your recent freshmeat.net submission:
- Thanks, but we don't like to clutter the project index with joke submissions.
Sincerely,
jeff covey
Which is a very gid wey tae insult a country! Aye, Scots is a language which originated aroond the end ay the 16th century (aboot the same time as Ainglish) an is no deid yet - despite the best attempts ay some governments an schools (less sae noo). It's mair spoken than written sae a lot ay the speelings are variable. Some people consider that Ainglish is a no viry nice dialect ay Scots.
(Incidently ah made up wi the nice people at Freshmeat, it's no their fault they're Americans ken.)
Gosh, so are there any dialects of Scots?
Aye, mony. Ahm frae Edinburgh sae ah speak Embra (an Mozilla language pack is maisly in Embra) which is a form ay Lallans (alang wi Weegie :). People frae Aberdeen are mair likely tae speak Doric. Shaetlan far thaes frae Shetland (or, as they say, Shitland. Ach weel.). Also Ullans spoken in Ulster.
And what else is written in Scots
Search aroond the Internet fae Mattew Fitt (But n Ben A Go Go), Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting and ithers), Glenn Telfer (Scot's biographies), Hugh MacDermaid (mony poems) and ay course, Rabbie Burns (guess which language Auld Lang Sang is in).
So what do I do to get my browser in Scots?
Mak sure ye hae the correct version ay Mozilla fae the language pack, and jist click oan the link at the tap ay this page, the javascript should instaa it. (If yer usin Linux or the like, run Mozilla as root, ye may also hae tae change the permitions oan the file sc-GB.jar in mozilla's chrome directory.) Then restart Mozilla, an choose view->language->Scots (sc-GB) an restart Mozilla agin.
I see a mistake
Tell us, Jonathan Riddell, jr@jriddell.org.
This is great, can I help?
Mibby, read the stuff oan Mozilla's Localisation page an that. Then e-mail me an say how tae help. Mind there are mony mair programs oot there tae be translated!.
